Spinal Cord Injury Spasms: The Everyday Reality You Don’t Always See

Hello My People

Spasms are a common part of life with a spinal cord injury. They can be unpredictable, uncomfortable, and sometimes even painful. But they are also a reminder of how complex the body is, even when it does not work the way it used to.

What Are Spasms After a Spinal Cord Injury?

Spasms, also called spasticity, are involuntary muscle contractions that happen when nerves below the level of injury misfire. For many people with spinal cord injuries, these spasms:

  • Come without warning

  • Range from mild shaking to intense tightening

  • Can be uncomfortable or painful

  • Interfere with daily tasks or activities

Although frustrating, spasms are also a sign that the nervous system is still active, even in ways we do not always understand.

The Everyday Moments You Don’t Always See

This is the side of disability that is not often shown. People see the wheelchair, but they do not always see the hidden challenges like spasms, fatigue, or chronic pain. These moments show up uninvited, whether you are working or parenting.

But here is the truth: joy does not stop here. Awareness matters, and so does representation. Sharing these everyday realities helps replace myths with understanding.

Choosing Joy in the Midst of It

Even when my body surprises me with spasms, I am still committed to living fully. That means choosing laughter, choosing purpose, and continuing to share my story so others know they are not alone.

Disability is part of my life, but it is not the end of joy.
