Pregnancy, Motherhood, and Life After Spinal Cord Injury

Hello my people,

September is Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month and one of the questions I get asked most often online is some version of this:

“How did you get pregnant and have two kids if you cannot walk?”

I understand why people are curious. After my car accident in 2008, I had questions too. I wondered what pregnancy and childbirth would look like after a spinal cord injury. Most of those concerns came from a place of not knowing. That is exactly why I share so openly today, because the only way to replace ignorance is with information.

Mobility and Fertility Are Not the Same Thing

Here is the truth: mobility has nothing to do with fertility.

Every year an estimated 250,000 to 500,000 people worldwide sustain a spinal cord injury, and many of us go on to build families. If everything is healthy with a woman and her uterus, pregnancy and childbirth are possible with the right medical care and support system.

Walking is not a requirement for motherhood. Love, patience, resilience, and access to good healthcare are what matter.

Why Representation Matters

When I was newly injured, I did not see many women who looked like me raising children, balancing work and family, and living full and vibrant lives. That absence of representation created unnecessary doubt and fear.

That is why I share my journey. I want someone else who is newly navigating life after spinal cord injury to see me and know that yes, it is possible. Family, joy, and miracles do not end with an injury.

My Testimony in Motherhood

At the end of the day, my greatest testimonies call me “Mommy.” My children prove every single day that life after spinal cord injury is not just worth living, it is full of purpose, growth, and miracles.

For those who want a deeper look, I have documented my journey, including a full birth vlog from my first pregnancy, on my YouTube channel. These stories are not just about me, they are about showing the world what is possible.

Join the Conversation

Throughout September I will be posting daily to shed light on life after spinal cord injury, from the challenges to the victories and everything in between. If you have questions or topics you would like me to address during this awareness series, please leave a comment or send me a message.

Awareness grows when we speak up. If you learn something here, share it. Correct the myths when you hear them. You never know who needs to see that representation.

Because life after spinal cord injury is still life, and it is still full of miracles.
